Switching to a Fabric Capacity

Last updated 18 days ago

As of version 6.4, the Reporting Hub supports the use of Fabric capacities for hosting your embedded Power BI content. In addition to all of Microsoft Fabric's amazing features, the lowest tier Fabric capacity (F2 SKU) is considerably more cost effective than the lowest tier Power BI Embedded capacity (node type A1). We recommend switching to a Fabric capacity. For more info please visit:

Switching to a Fabric Capacity

Create and configure a Fabric Capacity in Azure Portal

In your Azure portal, create a Fabric Capacity resource. (Search Microsoft Fabric in the search bar at the top.)

  • Use the same Subscription and Resource group that your Reporting Hub app is in.

  • The default size is F64; adjust the size to your desired tier.

Assign the Reporting Hub Enterprise Application as a Capacity Administrator for the Fabric capacity.

Capacities must be active (not suspended) to add Capacity Admins. Ensure your capacity is turned on before continuing to the following steps.

  1. After the capacity has been deployed, select Go to resource or select the Fabric capacity you just created from the Azure portal.

  2. In the left menu, under Settings, select Capacity administrators.

  3. Select Add.

  4. Select Save.

Assign the Reporting Hub Enterprise Application Contributor permissions on the Fabric Capacity.

  1. Select Access control (IAM) for your Fabric capacity.

  2. Select Role assignments and look for the Reporting Hub App. If it hasn't been assigned a Contributor role, the following steps describe how to do so.

  3. Select Add > Add role assignment.

  4. Select Privileged administrator roles, then select Contributor and then Next.

  5. With Assign access to set to User, group, or service principal, click Select members and, choose your Reporting Hub Enterprise application registration. Hit Select.

  6. Select Review + assign to continue to review page.

  7. Select Review + assign to add role assignment.

Change your Power BI workspaces over to your new capacity.

  1. At the top, select the ellipsis icon and select Workspace settings.

  2. Select Premium, then select Fabric capacity.

  3. In the License capacity dropdown, select the capacity you just created.

  4. Select Apply.

Add the capacity to your global tenant.

  1. On your Reporting Hub site, select App Settings.

  2. Select Refresh Workspaces and Capacities.

  3. On the Tenant Admin page, select the ellipsis icon next to your Global Tenant and select Edit.

  4. In the Power BI Embedded Capacity field, select your new fabric capacity.

  5. Select Save.

Finding your App Registration Name in the Reporting Hub

  1. In your Reporting Hub application navigate to App Settings.

  2. Select App Information.

  3. The name, client ID, and object ID are listed under the Service Principal Information section.
